Description:

A PhD position is available in the Department of Language Science and

The project has an empirical, corpus-linguistic and a theoretical goal.
Judeo-Spanish spoken in Sofia (western Bulgaria) and Plovdiv (eastern

analyzed. By contrasting selected phonetic-phonological and morphosyntactic
features (e.g., vocalism, intonation, pronouns, word order) of the two
Judeo-Spanish varieties with modern Iberian Spanish, the corresponding urban
varieties of Bulgarian and Old Spanish, we aim to gain a better understanding
of the status quo of the Judeo-Spanish spoken in Bulgaria. Furthermore, our
aim is to contribute to the current research questions in language contact
research addressing the question of which linguistic areas are vulnerable to
contact-induced change.

Job requirements and responsibilities:

 - acoustic analysis of vowel reduction
 - intonation analysis
 - statistical analysis
 - documentation of the results and participation in scientific publications

research
 - speech signal processing with Praat
 - very good knowledge of English (spoken and written)
 - good knowledge of German or willingness to acquire it within a reasonable
period of time

 - a broad range of further education and professional development programmes
