Description:

PhD scholarship:
The project “Intonation and rhythm of dialects and Italian: the case of
Campania” is opening a fully-funded 4-year PhD position in linguistics at
Ghent University, with a monthly salary of approx. €2100 starting September
2022. The project is embedded in the research group DiaLing (Diachronic and
Diatopic linguistics: https://research.flw.ugent.be/en/dialing), and forms a
multinational collaboration between Ghent University (Belgium), Università del
Salento (Italy), and Rutgers University (USA).

The project:
Despite the importance of prosody in the identification of the speaker’s
regional origin, we know little about how dialectal prosody is reflected in
regional pronunciation, and we know even less about how dialectal prosody
varies in a given geographic area compared to the prosody of the regional
varieties of the national language spoken in the same area. This project
addresses these issues by focusing on the case of four Campania varieties:
Neapolitan and upper Cilento Italian, and Neapolitan and upper Cilento
dialect. The project aims at (1) analyzing the prosodic systems of the two
dialects, (2) comparing each dialect and the corresponding regional Italian
variety, and (3) making a comparison between the two dialects, and between the
two regional Italian varieties. We investigate the prosody of these varieties
with a novel methodology integrating rhythm and intonation analyses, and
relying on different types of speech (read, scripted, dialogical).
Besides supervision at Ghent University, the project will involve fieldwork in
Campania and research periods at the co-supervisors’ institutions.

The supervisory team:
The project is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Claudia Crocco (project PI,
Universiteit Gent: https://research.flw.ugent.be/en/claudia.crocco), Prof. Dr.
Barbara Gili Fivela (Università del Salento:
https://www.unisalento.it/scheda-utente/-/people/barbara.gilifivela) and Prof.
Dr. Mariapaola D’Imperio (Rutgers University:
https://ling.rutgers.edu/people-mainmenu-137/faculty/109-people/faculty/474-ma
riapaola-d-imperio).

Requirements:
 - Master degree (obtained before 31/7/2022) in Linguistics or related
discipline, with outstanding study results
 - Native or near-native proficiency in Italian and in a Campania dialect
 - University-level background in phonetics and/or prosody and/or dialectology
 - Proficiency in written and spoken English
 - Knowledge or willingness to learn basics of computer programming and
statistics (R, Python etc.)
