Subject: Texts Used in Psycholinguistic Research with Children

I was wondering if subscribers of the LinguistList may be able to help me. I
am a PhD student currently exploring whether working-class children are placed
under increased and cognitive load in the classroom because of the requirement
that they use a variety of language which is less routine for them.
Specifically, my project seeks to investigate the impact of non-standard
dialect usage on the social class attainment gap, whether an increase in
cognitive load affects the use of Standard English in working-class children’s
speech, and whether differences in working memory and executive functioning
affect the use of Standard English in working-class children’s speech.

I will be undertaking a dual-task speech-based experiment, designed to induce
varying levels of cognitive load. The experiment will include 4 different
conditions and a reading and comprehension task will be set as the control
task. Children aged 10-11 will be given a short story text to read, and they
must commit to memory as much as they can about the story. They will then be
asked a series of questions about the story they have read. I am looking for
any recommendations from other linguists in the field on any texts they have
used in their research with children of this age group. Ideally, the texts
need to be engaging for the participants - potentially fairytales or something
of this sort? I look forward to hearing everybody’s suggestions! Thanks in
advance for your help!
