Description:

GRINNELL COLLEGE. The Linguistics Concentration invites applications for a
two-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Linguistics beginning Fall 2022.
Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) possible. Research and
teaching interests might include, but are not limited to: phonetics,
phonology, morphology, syntax, and/or semantics, as well as multilingualism,
and/or Indigenous/minority languages/dialects.

The Linguistics Concentration at Grinnell is an interdisciplinary program of
study consisting of an introduction to linguistics, intermediate courses in
syntax, typology, and Indo-European, an advanced course in language change,
and electives pertaining to language drawn from the wider Grinnell curriculum.
Our interdepartmental faculty come from the Departments of Anthropology,
Chinese and Japanese, Classics, Education, English, Philosophy, Russian, and
Spanish. Our concentrators major in anthropology, computer science, and
English or another language, among others. Our courses reference different
languages from around the world and use linguistic data that don’t come from
the world’s most-frequently spoken languages.

The Visiting Assistant Professor will teach five courses per year, including
Introduction to General Linguistics (LIN 114), our core courses in
Phonetics/Phonology, Morphology, or Syntax, as well an upper-level course in
our own curriculum or of their own design.
