Description:

Opportunities to become a PhD student in Language and communication

Preproposals for the Dutch 2023 NWO call PhDs in the Humanities
The Centre for Language Studies (CLS) of Radboud University in Nijmegen, the
Netherlands calls for submissions of preproposals for the Dutch Research
Council’s (NWO) call PhDs in the Humanities.

Radboud University can nominate a limited number of prospective PhD students
with their project proposals to NWO for research funding. Funding would entail
a four-year appointment at Radboud University. CLS invites students who are
interested in Linguistics or Communication research to respond to our call by
submitting a preproposal to CLS. CLS will provide supervision and guidance to
a selected number of candidates, in what is a staged procedure.

Staged procedure:
The procedure to become eligible as an NWO PhD candidate consists of five
stages:
 - submission of your preproposal to CLS (see below for details);
 - a limited number of applicants will be offered the possibility of
submitting an expanded preproposal in November 2022;
 - from these applicants, a smaller number of candidates will be selected to
write a full proposal, with support from, among others, our research grant
office. The full proposal has to be submitted in January 2023;
 - the best one or two proposals will be submitted by Radboud University to
NWO for the Dutch national competition for PhDs in the Humanities funding;
 - the best candidates nationwide will receive funding from NWO. The PhD
candidates selected by NWO will start their project on 1 September 2023. See
last year’s procedure: https://www.nwo.nl/en/calls/phds-humanities-2022

What can be applied for?
Applicants that are selected by NWO will receive a fixed-term appointment at
Radboud University. PhD student appointments in the domain of Humanities
generally take 4 years full time, including half a year of academic service
and/or teaching. The appointment will cover the candidate’s salary and up to
€5000 for basic research expenses. Candidates will have at least two
supervisors, one of whom must be a full professor or a designated associate
professor at Radboud University.

How to apply in stage 1 (Preproposal)?
Applicants have to submit the following:
 - a CV with a list of grades for BA and (Research)MA (max. 2 pages). The MA
program needs to be related to Linguistics or Communication Science and to be
completed before 1 September 2023, which has to be confirmed by your diploma
or a written statement of the thesis supervisor;
 - the preproposal, i.e., a brief description of the proposed PhD research
topic/question and its relation to CLS (max. 200 words, excl. references).
Read the mission and focus areas of CLS: https://www.ru.nl/cls/
 - a motivated list of up to 4 preferred potential CLS supervisors (see the
CLS website for a list of researchers). Please do not contact the supervisors
yourself.

Your application has to be submitted by 26 September 2022, 23:59 (GMT+1) as a
single pdf attachment in an e-mail to GSHcoordinator at let.ru.nl with in the
subject line “Preproposal PhD in the Humanities 2023”.

Selected applicants will be contacted by their potential supervisors no later
than 14 October 2022. The other applicants will not be informed.

Application Deadline: 26-Sep-2022
