Description:

The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences is seeking to
appoint a research assistant on a full time (1 FTE), fixed-term contract for a
period of 8 months. The position is available as of approximately August 2022
(subject to recruitment timescales). The position is suitable for someone who
has a master-level experience in linguistics (especially semantics) and would
like to have a firsthand experience in collaborative research before starting
a PhD. Below is the link to the job descriptions and application instructions.

The Opportunity:
We are seeking to recruit a research assistant with expertise in semantics to
contribute to the project “Logic in semantic universals”
(http://www.wataruuegaki.com/flf/), funded by the UKRI Future Leaders
Fellowship (PI: Dr Wataru Uegaki).

The goal of the job is to help create a cross-linguistic database of semantic
properties of four domains of logical vocabularies: connectives, quantifiers,
modals, and clause-embedding predicates. The role involves development of
empirical tests for a set of semantic properties relevant for the vocabularies
(in collaboration with the PI and other team members) and annotation of these
properties based on the tests in consultation with native speakers.

Your skills and attributes for success:
 - Undergraduate and/or MSc-level degree in linguistics
 - Knowledge of syntax and formal semantics.
 - Ability to control for various grammatical and extra-grammatical factors in
testing linguistic properties.
 - Previous experience of cross-linguistic semantic data collection.
 - Previous experience of working in a research team.
