PhD position: Discourse markers in Romance languages (65%)

The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive
universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. With its six
faculties and its interfaculty centres, it offers a broad spectrum of
scientific disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas,
supported by the administration with its services.

The Collaborative Research Center 1252 “Prominence in Language” is
characterized by a dynamic research environment. It brings together 22
sub-projects in linguistics. The call is valid for subproject C02 “Tense and
aspect in discourse” under the direction of Professor Dr. Martin Becker
(www.sfb1252.uni-koeln.de).

Your Tasks: 
 - Researching discourse markers with respect to temporal and argumentative
discourse structures in at least one Romance language as part of a
dissertation project
 - Realizing corpus studies
 - Preparing, realizing and statistically analyzing experiments
 - Presenting results at international conferences
 - Supporting the organization of project conferences and meetings of the CRC

Your Profile: 
 - You need to have a university degree. Your studies should have included a
focus on Romance linguistics.
 - You should be capable of thinking conceptually, of quickly fathoming out
new research topics, and immerse into new research methods with pleasure.
 - You need to have excellent knowledge of one Romance language, advanced
knowledge of another Romance language is an advantage. Furthermore, you need
to have command of both written and spoken English. Basic knowledge of German
is an advantage, but may also be acquired during the first year of the PhD.
 - Teamworking skills are essential.

The position is available from the 01 September 2022 on a part-time basis with
25,89 working hours. The position is to be filled for a fixed term until 31
August 2025. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and
personal qualifications, the salary is based on renumeration group 13 TV-L of
the pay scale for the German public sector.
