Description:

The Department of Anthropology is seeking a linguist specializing in
Indigenous languages who will help build an interdisciplinary Indigenous
language focus at The University of Winnipeg. We are seeking an individual
with training in descriptive linguistics and/or language documentation and/or
language acquisition and who has experience developing curriculum,
programming, and research relevant to the revitalization of Indigenous
languages in Manitoba and neighbouring regions. The successful applicant will
be an effective teacher whose scholarship is grounded in community-engaged
practices and methodologies and who has a demonstrated ability to work
collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment. The ability to speak an
Indigenous language spoken in Manitoba or neighbouring regions is an asset.

We are expecting to fill this tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant
Professor. Exceptional candidates may be considered at other ranks, in
accordance with the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association Collective
Agreement, and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Candidates are normally expected to have a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Anthropology,
or a related discipline. However, equivalencies as an Indigenous knowledge
keeper and/or through teaching and scholarly experience in academic or other
relevant (e.g. activist and community-based activities) settings, combined
with formal training in Linguistics, will be considered.

The successful candidate will teach core undergraduate courses in the
Interdisciplinary Linguistics program, and will develop new courses relevant
to Indigenous language learning, documentation, and revitalization in Manitoba
and neighbouring regions. The successful candidate will develop an innovative
program of research that has the potential for external research funding and
dissemination through publication or research-creation. The successful
candidate will be expected to make contributions through service to the
department, the University, and the broader community.

The selection committee will begin reviewing applications on Tuesday, May 24,
2022 and will continue until the position is filled; full consideration is
assured for applications received by Friday, May 20, 2022. Subject to
budgetary approval, the expected start date is July 1, 2022. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Please view the full job ad and instructions for applications at the
application link below.

The University of Winnipeg is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and
recognizes that a diverse staff and faculty benefits and enriches the work,
learning and research environments, and is essential to academic and
institutional excellence. In accordance with the University of Winnipeg
Employment Equity and Diversity Policy and section 11 of The Human Rights
Code, preference will be given to qualified Indigenous candidates. Applicants
are encouraged to confidentially self-identify at the time of application.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens
and permanent residents will be given priority.
