Description:

The successful candidate will teach and conduct research in the linguistics of
the English language and bring new areas of teaching and research to the
Department. The expectation is also that they will actively apply for research
grant funding and undertake administrative responsibilities within the
Department.

Duties and responsibilities:

Teaching: 
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to existing
undergraduate and postgraduate courses in several areas of English Linguistics
and to create new courses. Current courses include Modern English Grammar,
English Corpus Linguistics, English in Use, the Sounds of English and Research
Methodology at postgraduate level, and History of the English Language, Modern
English Language, and Literary Linguistics at undergraduate level.

The post-holder will also be asked to teach one-to-one tutorials to
undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervise taught postgraduate
students’ dissertations, and undertake the normal duties of teaching
administration which include: the development of learning materials; preparing
schemes of work; monitoring student progress, achievement, and attendance; the
provision of pastoral care and support; the setting and marking of
examinations. 

It is expected that the post-holder will offer specialist supervision to
research degree students.

Research, public engagement and knowledge exchange: 
The post-holder will contribute to the advancement of scholarship in the field
of English Linguistics through publications, where possible working with
colleagues in the Survey of English Usage. Research outputs will be submitted
to the UK Research 
Excellence Framework.

The Department has a record in attracting external funding. The successful
candidate will be asked to apply for externally funded research grants, and to
lead or engage in collaborative research projects. 

Raising the Department’s and the Faculty’s research profile through public
engagement, knowledge exchange activities and interdisciplinary collaboration
will be expected. 

Enabling: 
The post-holder will be required to take on a proportionate workload of
enabling activity at the discretion of the Head of Department. This may
include convening the MA programme in English Linguistics, leading teams,
coordinating modules, developing new course material, assessment of
applications, pastoral responsibilities, co-ordinating boards of examiners,
etc.

Attendance at departmental staff meetings, teaching committee meetings and
related events is mandatory.

Other: 
 - To undertake such other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of
the post, and as may reasonably be requested by the Head of Department, such
as some interviewing of UCAS applicants.
 - Actively follow and promote UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities.
 - Maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety
regulations.

commitment to academic excellence; that is, to the conduct of research,
publication, teaching, enabling and other forms of knowledge transfer, at the
highest levels of international achievement.
