13th International Columbia School Conference on the Interaction of Linguistic
Form and Meaning with Human Behavior With a special session on Columbia School
theory applied to language teaching

Columbia School linguistics offers a radically functional conception of
language, which is seen as a semiotic system whose structure is shaped both by
its communicative function and by the characteristics of its human users.
Grammatical analyses account for the distribution of linguistic signals as an
interaction of their linguistic meaning with pragmatic and functional factors
such as inference, ease of processing, and iconicity. The signals of meanings
can be lexical roots, grammatical affixes, and particular configurations of
syntactic orders. No assumption is made that linguistic utterances are
manifestations of sentences or sentential categories. Phonological analyses
explain the syntagmatic and paradigmatic distribution of phonological units
within signals, also drawing on both communicative function and human
physiological and psychological characteristics.

2nd Call for Papers:

The organizers welcome the presentation of work carried out from the
perspective of any theoretical framework that views languages as semiotic
systems. Papers are invited which deal with any of the broad and overlapping
areas of interest listed below,

i. Linguistic theory
ii. Phonology as human behavior
iii. Grammatical analysis (based on attested discourse data)
iv. Lexical analysis (based on attested discourse data)

Submissions that establish a connection between CS linguistic analysis and
second language acquisition are welcome for a special section of the program
that will be devoted to language teaching. Presentations will be 20 minutes,
with 10 minutes for discussion. They will take place in person and online. The
preferred modality of presentation should be clarified with the submission of
the abstract. Submissions are also invited for poster sessions. The modality
of poster sessions will be exclusively in person.

Abstracts should be sent as an email attachment to conference at csling.org
following these guidelines:
- The subject of the email should be: CS Abstract 2023.
- In the body of the email, please include: (1) Author name(s) and
affiliation(s); (2) Title of the paper or poster; (3) Type of submission
(paper for in-person presentation, paper for online presentation, poster); (4)
Email
addresses and telephone numbers of all authors.
- The abstract, containing only the title of the paper/poster and the text of
the abstract, should be sent as an attachment (PDF, RTF, or Word format).

The abstract should be no more than 300 words, although references and/or data
may be added to that limit.
DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ABSTRACTS: May 16, 2022
Notification of acceptance: June 30, 2022

Authors may submit a maximum of two abstracts, be they single or co-authored.
We particularly encourage submissions from graduate students and junior
researchers, and some financial support for travel may be available. The
language of the conference is English, but papers/posters delivered in
languages other than English will be considered.
