Duration: 06-Jan-2023 to 06-Jul-2023
Voluntary
Internship Location: Nantes, Pays de la Loire, France
Minimum Education Level: BA
Description:
Context:
The internship will take place in the context of the ANR project “Lexhnology”.
This project aims to create an online learning resource for learners of legal
English, specifically for reading comprehension of American judicial
decisions. Lexhnology is led by Mary C. Lavissière (CRINI, Nantes Université).
Other partners include LS2N (Nantes Université), ATILF (CNRS & Université de
Lorraine), and LAIRDIL (Université de Toulouse). The project includes
integrating a move-annotated corpus and an algorithm that employs artificial
intelligence methods into the online learning resource.

Goal of the internship:
The internship candidate will contribute to the elaboration of a move analysis
(Swales 2004: 228-229) on American Supreme Court judicial opinions. The
Swalesian school of move analysis defines a move as a unit of communication,
“discoursal or rhetorical units performing coherent communicative functions in
texts”. Each move is realized by a number of concrete steps. The intern will
work with a group of linguists who focus on teaching/learning English for
specific purposes and legal professionals in order to identify typical moves
and steps as well as variants in a corpus of judicial opinions constructed for
the project. The intern may subsequently apply for a financed PhD project that
will start in September 2023.
