Meeting Description:

The 6th ILLA General Conference brings into focus new discursive practices in
the dissemination of legal knowledge both within the expert community
(legal-legal communication) and in communication with the outside world
(legal-lay communication). It aims to examine local, national and global
dimensions of legal knowledge dissemination, explaining the role of
communicative processes which, on the one hand, are rooted in legal tradition
and, on the other, are subject to change as a result of the ongoing
globalization, democratization and digitization of specialised communication.
How, where and by whom legal knowledge is communicated depends both on the
local systems and the global processes enabled by the presence of information
technologies, digital tools and easier public access to information.

We welcome papers related to the linguistic, social and cultural mechanisms
which underpin legal knowledge dissemination across legal cultures. We also
invite contributions which focus on the relation between multimodality and the
law, such as the increasing visualization of the legal process, use of gesture
in courtroom interaction, use of camera in court, use of images in judicial
decision-making, and the visibility of law-related themes in social media.

In addition to the above, we encourage linguists and legal practitioners to
submit abstract proposals for one of the following thematic panels:

Historical perspective on legal discourse
Pragmatics of legal discourse
Legal interpretation and judicial argumentation
Language and power in the courtroom
Language and multimodal communication in legal settings
Law, media and communication of legal knowledge
Language of prejudice, discrimination and violence
Language and disadvantage before the law
EU legal culture and multilingualism
Philosophy of law
