Description:

The Department of Asian Languages & Cultures (http://www.alc.ucla.edu/) at the
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), invites applications for an open
rank position in Japanese linguistics and applied linguistics. This position
will begin on July 1, 2023.

We are interested in applicants who take a usage-based approach to language,
seeking to explain patterns of language use in terms of such factors as social
interaction, culture, cognition, and history. Applicants whose work engages
with multimodality, corpora, conversation structure, linguistic typology, or
genre/register differences are particularly encouraged to apply. The ideal
candidate must additionally have an active research profile in any area of
applied linguistics that is informed by their usage-based linguistic research.
Such areas may include, but are not limited to, second language acquisition
and learning, language pedagogy, teacher training, material development,
technology and language teaching, and assessment. Prior experiences in
Japanese language teaching at multiple levels, Teaching Assistant supervising,
and teacher training in North America are highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a level of academic
achievement and reputation that is commensurate with the rank sought, teach
both undergraduate and graduate courses, provide service to the department
(including potentially directing the Japanese language program) and campus,
and demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity-related teaching, research,
and/or service. Women and minority candidates are especially encouraged to
apply.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in Linguistics, Applied linguistics, or
other relevant field, and possess native or near-native Japanese language
proficiency. Salary is commensurate with experience and rank sought. Please
