University or Organization: Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Job Location: Brussels, Belgium
Job Title: Two PhD fellows in Psycholinguistics of Multilingualism
Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Multilingualism

Description:

The Brussels Center for Language Studies (BCLS) of the Vrije Universiteit
Brussel (VUB) has an opening for a PhD fellowship for a total period of four
years, starting around March 2023.

The positions are part of the Strategic Research Programmes funded project
entitled “Multilingual Language Control”. The project is supervised by Mathieu
Declerck, Esli Struys, and Alex Housen.

The project is concerned with the nature and role of language control. When
multilinguals use language, all known languages are activated to some degree
and compete with each other, leading to cross-language interference which
hinders fluent and efficient language use. Language control is the process
used to minimize this cross-language interference and to allow multilinguals
to select words and grammatical structures in the appropriate or intended
language. One position will focus on the nature and influence of language
control when multilinguals only use one language within a context. While we
know that cross-language interference occurs in such a context, and thus that
language control is necessary, very few studies have empirically investigated
this possibility. The other position will focus on the link between language
control and second language acquisition since there is very little empirical
evidence into this connection.

Job description:
The candidates will become members of the Brussels Center for Language Studies
(BCLS) at the VUB.

the research project and (ii) appropriate methodological procedures for
investigating these concepts.

online experiments).
 - interpret the results of the analyses and report on the project in
conference presentations, academic publications and in outreach activities for
a wider public.
 - by the end of the four-year term, submit and defend a PhD dissertation
based on the project.
