Abstract:

Translated from the original Arabic, Al-Qata’i: Ibn Tulun’s City
Without Walls relates the story of medieval Egyptian leader Ibn
Tulun’s quest to build the city of al-Qata’i—now Cairo—into a thriving
multicultural empire.

Framed by a retelling of the 1918 rediscovery of Ibn Tulun’s medieval
mosque—which still stands today—Al-Qata’i is a novel in three
interconnected parts. The story begins when a cruel tax collector
working on behalf of the despotic regime drives a local fisherman to
suicide, motivating his son to team up with Turkish army officer Ibn
Tulun to exact his revenge. Through skill and cunning, Ibn Tulun comes
to power as the independent ruler of Egypt. The second part follows
the reign of Ibn Tulun from three different perspectives—that of his
secretary, his wife, and his archnemesis—as he succeeds in uniting the
Greek, Roman, Coptic, and Arab elements of Egyptian society. Part
three introduces the character of Aisha, Ibn Tulun’s daughter, who
stops at nothing to preserve her father’s city and his legacy.

A multigenerational epic tale of power, love, and revenge set against
the sprawling backdrop of early medieval Egypt, Al-Qata’i is a
masterwork of historical fiction. Through close attention to the lives
of an array of characters from all walks of life, award-winning
Egyptian novelist Reem Bassiouney deftly explores Egyptian identity;
Egypt’s relationship with the wider Arab world; and, ultimately, how
the past shapes who we are today.

Reem Bassiouney is an Egyptian author living in Cairo. She is the
winner of the 2019 – 2020 Naguib Mahfouz Award for best Egyptian novel
for Sons of the People: The Mamluk Trilogy. Roger Allen is an Arabic
literature scholar and translator.
