Prof. Dr. Susanne Reiterer (University of Vienna) and Dr. Vita Kogan
(University College London) invite to contribute a chapter to the
volume entitled "Phonaesthetics in the Multilingual World: Music in
the Language". The edited volume is dedicated to the interdisciplinary
study of phonaesthetics – the aesthetic pleasure people experience
when listening to the sounds of languages, often referred to as
“phonetic chill.”

The volume aims at introducing phonaesthetics, which is situated at
the interface of linguistics, sociology, psychology, cognitive
science, musicology, and aesthetics and will provide relevant
theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research with a
special focus on multilingualism and second language acquisition. The
volume will not include works related to literature and poetry.

The book will be global in scope, offering a range of
multidisciplinary perspectives on phonaesthetics and its
sociolinguistic and cognitive/neuro-psychological nature while
providing insights into how phonaesthetics can serve us in our
multilingual world (language education, language policy, and beyond).
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit a chapter proposal
of 400-500 words (excluding references).

The topics of the chapters include, but are not limited to the
following:

- cross-linguistic investigations of phonaesthetics
- linguistic (phonetic and phonological) grounds of phonaesthetic
effects
- the interface of music and language in phonaesthetics
- individual differences in auditory processing and cognition in
relation to phonaesthetics
- language stereotypes and attitudes and phonaesthetics
- phonaesthetic effects in second language acquisition, including
phonaesthetics as a source of language-learning motivation and
pedagogical applications
- sound symbolism and sensory linguistics and phonaesthetics

The tentative schedule as follows:

July 1, 2023: Proposal Submission Deadline

September 1, 2023: Notification of Acceptance

March 15, 2024: Full Chapter Submission

If you have any questions or concerns, please email at
VitaVKogan at gmail or Susanne.Reiterer at univie.ac.at. Thank you very much
for your consideration of this invitation, and we hope to hear from
you by July 1st. Please, make sure you send the following
requirements:

1. Your chapter proposal (400-500 words)
2. Your information (name, job title, affiliation, email address, and
a short biography)

Please feel free to share this call with colleagues.

Best,
Susanne and Vita
