Subject: Computational Linguistics: Assistant Professor, Linguistics, Macalester College

University or Organization: Macalester College
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
Job Title: Assistant Professor, Linguistics
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Syntax; Semantics; and/or
Morphology

Description:

The Department of Linguistics invites applications for a full-time,
tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor to begin
fall 2024. We seek applicants with a specialization in computational
linguistics. Applicants with a primary or secondary specialization in
syntax, semantics, and/or morphology are especially encouraged to
apply, although we will consider applicants in other subfields. We
also welcome applicants with expertise in low-resourced languages to
apply. A conferred Ph.D. in linguistics or related field by the
beginning of the appointment is required.

Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in
undergraduate teaching and evidence of scholarly promise. The normal
teaching load is 5 courses/year. Two of the five courses will be
cross-listed with the Department of Math, Statistics, and Computer
Science. The new faculty member will design a new set of courses, but
may be asked to teach preexisting courses in rotation with the other
faculty in the Linguistics Department.

To apply to this position, please submit the following materials to
Academic Jobs Online using the link below:
 - curriculum vitae (CV)
 - two letters of recommendation – at least one of which discusses
your potential as a teacher
 - DEI Statement: a statement of your experience in, commitment to,
and vision for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Discuss
contributions to DEI initiatives in your teaching, advising and
mentorship, curriculum, scholarship, service, and/or community and
professional engagement. Strong candidates will have experience and
vision regarding teaching and mentorship of students of multiple and
diverse backgrounds with attention to structural barriers that limit
access to educational opportunities.
 - teaching statement: a statement of your experience in, commitment
to, and vision for teaching undergraduate students. Discuss
pedagogical approaches (e.g., inclusive teaching, active and
innovative teaching strategies, assessment of learning outcomes),
future teaching development goals, and courses you would be passionate
to teach or introduce into the curriculum.
 - research statement: a statement of your contributions to the
scholarly field and future research goals. Highlight professional
engagement in the field through journal publications, conference
presentations, and/or software development as well as ongoing
publishable projects. Describe your current and immediate future
research projects. The strongest candidates will have enthusiasm and a
feasible plan for incorporating undergraduate students in their future
research.
 - a cover letter (2-3 pages, no more than three pages) that provides
an executive summary of your:
     a) specific interest in joining the Linguistics Department at
Macalester College
     b) training and experience in linguistics, particularly if you do
not have a Ph.D. in Linguistics
     c) experience in, commitment to, and vision for DEI
     d) experience in, commitment to, and vision for teaching
undergraduate students
     e) contributions to the scholarly field and future research goals

Application materials should be written to be accessible to all
members of the search committee (including Linguistics and
non-Linguistics faculty and undergraduate students), as well as the
college Provost and Dean of the Faculty.

For any questions about the position, please contact the chair of the
search committee, Professor Christina Esposito
(esposito at macalester.edu). Full consideration will be given to
