Full Title: On the Syntax of Adverbial Clauses in Insular Scandinavian and Övdalian

Date: 21-Apr-2023 - 21-Apr-2023
Location: Cologne, Germany
Contact Person: Łukasz Jędrzejowski
Meeting Email: l.jedrzejowski at uni-koeln.de
Web Site: http://www.lukasz-jedrzejowski.eu/adverbial-clauses-2/

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Linguistic Theories; Syntax

Call Deadline: 10-Mar-2023

Meeting Description:

A growing body of research has shown that adverbial clauses have a much more
intricate syntax than previously thought, providing a wealth of new empirical
findings. For instance, they differ dramatically with respect to what kind of
root phenomena they can host and what their adjoin position is (cf. Badan &
Haegeman 2022, Frey 2023a,b, and Schönenberger & Haegeman 2023). Selected
types of adverbial clauses are also claimed to be noun modifiers and exhibit
properties of relative clauses (cf. Arsenijević 2021, Donati 1997). This is
not surprising however, as adverbial subjunctions often contain nominal
elements (see Blümel & Pitsch 2019 for an overview and Sigurðsson 1981 for
Icelandic).

The main aim of this workshop is to bring together colleagues working on the
syntax of adverbial clauses in Faroese, Icelandic and Övdalian, and contribute
to a better understanding of adverbial dependency relationships in the domain
of clause-linkage. The workshop is planned as a syntactic endeavor. Areas of
interest include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

– Although (selected types of) adverbial clauses have been examined in
Icelandic (cf. Angantýsson 2020, Angantýsson & Jonas 2020, Angantýsson &
Jędrzejowski 2023, Gärtner & Eythórsson 2020, 2023) studies devoted to
adverbial clauses in Faroese and Övdalian are almost non-existent. And even
though various observations on subordinate clauses have been made (see, for
instance, Barnes 1987, Thráinsson et al. 2004, Heycock et al. 2010), there is
still much to uncover. How adverbial clauses are introduced, what their
internal and external syntax is, and what kind of variation they exhibit in
the individual languages are central questions addressed at the workshop.

– Independent studies have shown that Faroese, Icelandic and Övdalian differ
in many respects (see in particular the case studies collected in Thráinson et
al. 2007 and Bentzen et al. 2015 as well as Angantýsson 2015, 2020, and
Garbacz 2010, 2015). Nevertheless, not much is known about variation of
adverbial clauses in these languages. In this context, we welcome novel
contributions discussing the syntax of adverbial clauses from a comparative
perspective.

– Remarkably, Faarlund (2004: 269–270) observes that in Old Norse many types
of subordinate clauses with an adverbial function have the form of a relative
clause, moreover complementizers introducing adverbial clauses also existed,
specifically, as meðan ‘while’, unz ‘until’, or ef ‘if’. Here, we are
interested in contributions examining the origin and development of adverbial
clauses as well as their syntactic distribution in contact situations (cf.,
for example, Arnbjörnsdóttir et al. 2018 for North-American Icelandic).

The international workshop “On the Syntax of Adverbial Clauses in Insular
Scandinavian and Övdalian” is organized as part of the scientific network
“Adverbial clauses and subordinate dependency relationships” founded by German
Science Foundation granted to Łukasz Jędrzejowski (grant number 455700544).
The workshop will be hosted by the Institute for German Language and
Literature I at the University of Cologne, on April 21, 2023.

Invited speakers (all confirmed):

Piotr Garbacz (University of Oslo)
Caroline Heycock (University of Edinburgh)
Heimir F. Viðarsson (University of Iceland)

Call for Papers:

We welcome submission of abstracts for 30-minute presentations (with
additional 15 minutes for questions) on topics that address the syntax of
adverbial clauses in Insular Scandinavian and Övdalian. These may include case
studies, studies of trends, corpus findings, as well as formal theories of
particular adverbial clause types.

Abstracts should be submitted as a PDF format to
adverbial-clauses at uni-koeln.de, with all non-standard fonts embedded.
Abstracts should not exceed 3 pages in length, which includes all (corpus)
data/examples. An additional fourth page may be used for references. Abstracts
must be submitted in letter or A4 format with 1 inch or 2.5cm margins on all
sides, single-spaced, and in a font no smaller than 11pt. Abstracts should be
anonymous. Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract
per author.

Submission deadline: March 10, 2023
Notification: March 20, 2023

For inquiries, please send an e-mail to adverbial-clauses at uni-koeln.de
