Description:

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of North
Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a full-time, nine-month,
tenure-track Assistant Professor in Spanish, to begin fall 2023.

The successful candidate will teach a 3-3 load, including the Spanish for
Bilingual Speakers courses, courses in elementary and intermediate Spanish,
and a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in the program’s
curriculum.

They will have the opportunity to develop and lead study abroad programs and
teach additional courses in the summer. They will also serve as the
coordinator of the Spanish for Heritage Speakers program, assisting heritage
learners with course placement and colleagues with the differential
instruction of heritage learners of languages other than English.

As UNCW is an R2 institution, the candidate will be expected to maintain an
active research agenda. The successful candidate will also serve as a liaison
to the Centro Hispano (https://uncw.edu/centrohispano/) at UNCW.

To instantiate our values of Access, Equity, and Diversity, UNCW’s College of
Arts and Sciences (CAS) is embarking on our third year of a cohort hire
initiative. This year, our focus is on the areas of Environmental and Social
Justice, prioritizing analytics and approaches those center examinations of
race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, disability, democracy and
citizenship, and Indigenous or otherwise decolonizing methodologies. We are
actively building a network of researchers, scholars, and artists that will
support the ongoing work in which we are engaged and set a path forward as we
grow these areas of critical study into regional and national strengths. This
initiative is part of a larger set of coordinated diversity and inclusion
initiatives within the UNCW Division of Academic Affairs. The position of
Assistant Professor of Spanish / Coordinator of the Spanish for Bilingual
Speakers Program is part of this initiative.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:  
 - Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics, or a closely related field, on or by August
1, 2023
 - Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree may be considered if a
doctoral degree is conferred by August 1, 2023
 - Experience in teaching heritage learners of Spanish
 - Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English
 - Research specialization in Spanish as a Heritage Language
 - Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations
 - Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching
 - An active research agenda

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:  
Preference will be given to candidates who have the following qualifications:
 - Experience in developing and implementing curricula related to culturally
diverse populations
 - Evidence of effective engagement with a diverse student body
 - Experience in or commitment to using culturally responsive pedagogy that
leads to equitable outcomes for all students
