Job Title: Scientific Researcher Position in Linguistics
Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

The Cluster of Excellence ‘ROOTS – Social, Environmental, and Cultural
Connectivity in Past Societies’ at Kiel University invites applications for 1
scientific researcher position in linguistics.

The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date. The salary is
based on the German public pay scale E 13 TV-L (Tarifvertrag der Länder). The
regular weekly working hours are 65% (currently 25.155 hrs.) of those of a
full-time employee. The position will be filled on a fixed-term basis until
December 31, 2025.

Position “Modeling the prehistory of languages and their speakers through
computer simulations".

We are looking for a qualified and motivated candidate who combines a research
interest in diachronic linguistics with programming skills. Willingness to
participate in a large, international and interdisciplinary research projects
is expected.

The position is assigned to the Excellence Cluster ROOTS of Inequalities:
Social, Economic, and Environmental Development. The aim of the project is to
develop a model for the simulation of language phylogenies and employ it for
the investigation of questions in diachronic linguistics. The model should
allow for spatial movement of the languages in a semi-realistic landscape, it
should include interaction of both related and unrelated languages, and
languages should be characterized by synthetic data, such as word lists. Such
a model need not be developed from scratch, since previous work in this area
is available (Wichmann, Diachronica 34: 79-101 [2017]; Holman & Wichmann,
Systematic Biology 66: 604-610 [2017]; Kapur and Rogers, Proceedings of the
28th International Conference on Computational Linguistics, 788–798 [2020];
Wichmann, Physica A 572, 125913 [2021]). The list of research questions that
may be addressed is open-ended, but a few examples are: under what conditions
do continent-wide linguistic areas develop? What are the rates of development
or reduction of linguistic diversity in different world regions? Simulations
may also be used to test methods in historical linguistics, such as automated
methods for lexical-phonological reconstruction.

Required qualifications: Precondition is an outstanding Master's degree in
linguistics, computer science or related disciplines.
Other relevant qualifications: computational skills (preferably including R),
familiarity with quantitative methods in general, a sound understanding of the
world's linguistic diversity, and an understanding of the main questions of
historical linguistics.

The University also supports the employment of disabled persons. Persons with
disabilities will, with appropriate qualification and aptitudes, be employed
preferentially. Kiel University considers itself a modern and cosmopolitan
employer. We welcome your
application regardless of your age, gender, cultural and social background,
religion, worldview, disability or sexual identity. We promote gender
equality. The University strongly encourages women with appropriate
qualifications to apply for the position. Women with equivalent
qualifications, competence and expertise will be given preference. Women with
equivalent qualifications, competency, and professional performance are given
preferential consideration in the selection process. We expressly welcome
applicants with a migration background.
