Meeting Description:

The main aim of this conference is to bring together scholars working on the
most intriguing aspects of home language research, including but not limited
to multilingualism, family language policy, digital literacies, digital
practices, translanguaging, bilingual families and bilingual socialisation,
bilingual families and media, education and home language development,
bilingual education, multilingual special education, and teachers’ and
parents’ attitudes on home language maintenance and development. 

This conference is planned as an in-person networking event, where we will
hold individual paper sessions in the mornings and work together on developing
joint publications, research projects and grant proposals in the afternoons. A
special session is planned as a workshop for PhD candidates in the afternoon
on the last day.

ORGANISERS:

The conference is organised by the AILA ReN, Social and Affective Factors in
Home Language Maintenance and Development and Tallinn University Baltic Film,
Media and Arts School.

- Mila Schwartz (Oranim Academic College of Education, Israel) “Ecological
perspectives in early language education: Parent, teacher, peers, and child
agency in interaction”
- Xiao Lan Curdt-Christiansen (University of Bath, UK) “Pride, Prejudice and
Pragmatism: Family Language Policies in Transnational Families”
- Natalia Gagarina (Leibniz Center for General Linguistics, Germany)
“Diversity and uniformity in the building blocks of home languages: interplay
of theories and methods”


Call for Papers:

Deadline extended to 15 Feb, 2023.

We welcome papers presenting cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons in
any of the areas mentioned above. The conference also invites methodological
discussions of research related to home language maintenance and development.
We encourage educators, practitioners, and speech pathologists to join the
conference. On Saturday afternoon a PhD session will be organised where young
researchers will have an opportunity to give presentations on the topic of
their PhD theses and receive feedback from established scholars.

Talks: 20 min presentation + 10 min discussion

Language: English

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Abstracts should be anonymised and not exceed 300 words, excluding references.
Abstracts should clearly address the topic of the conference, state the
research question(s), the method, and the (expected) results. They should also
include a list of up to 5 keywords.
