Spring School on Cognitive Modeling

Host Institution: University of Groningen
Website: http://www.cognitive-modeling.com/springschool/

Dates: 27-Mar-2023 - 31-Mar-2023
Location: Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands

Focus: The Groningen Spring School on Cognitive Modelling introduces a range of techniques for mathematically modelling cognitive processes. This may be of interest to researchers in psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics, or to researchers working with language acquisition. One example of a potential application is to use computational cognitive environments to precisely specify hypotheses about detailed cognitive processes and intermediate mental representations during language processing, and then to test these hypotheses against time-course data that might include reading speed, eye-tracking, or brain activity data from EEG or fMRI. Error-driven learning allows hypotheses about the role of lexical or structural cues in language acquisition (e.g. of idioms) to be specified and tested against empirical data on language inputs and age of acquisition. During the week, participants with an interest in language will be able to discuss ideas and potential approaches with members of
the teaching team.
Minimum Education Level: BA

Special Qualifications:
The school is suitable for anyone above Bachelor level who is interested in using computational cognitive models in their work.

Description:
We are excited to announce the sixth Spring School on Cognitive Modeling in
Groningen, from 27-31 March 2023!

This time, the Spring School will cover three different modeling paradigms:
ACT-R, Nengo, and PRIMs. Each of these topics consists of a series of
lectures, as well as a number of hands-on exercises (tutorials).

Past years have shown that students get most out of the spring school if they
really emerge themselves into one modeling paradigm. We therefore recommend
you choose one topic for which you will attend both the lectures as well as
the tutorials. In addition, you can select a second paradigm, for which you
attend the lectures only.

To give students a broader picture, there will also be three guest lectures
throughout the week. These lectures each give an introduction to yet another
modeling paradigm: accumulator models (Leendert van Maanen), error-driven
learning models (Jacolien van Rij), and dynamical systems (Herbert Jäger).
Everyone is encouraged to attend those lectures.

To round of the program, there will be a poster session, where students
present themselves and their research, as well as a city tour, and our
(in)famous spring school dinner.

Registration is now open.
