Convergence during conversations: an interdisciplinary approach from
language to the brain

The quality of an interaction depends on the possibility for
interlocutors to exchange information which is known to be dependent
on how they converge to each other. We propose in this project to
explore this convergence phenomenon during a conversation at verbal
and behavioral levels and analyze how behavioral dynamics interact
with neural dynamics. We already acquired a full dataset of natural
conversations including EEG and multimodal physiology and behavior. We
will adopt a full multimodal perspective by exploring alignment
phenomena at all many different levels (phonetic, lexical, syntactic,
semantic, pragmatic, gestural). Following some preliminary analyses
linking speech envelope and brain signal in the low-frequency range,
we will use machine learning techniques to bridge the multiple
alignment levels to neural signals.

This PhD is highly interdisciplinary by gathering linguistics,
neuroscience and computational methods. It is part of a broader
project bringing together several research units and experimental
platforms studying the brain basis of language processing. The PhD
will have two co-supervisors, in computational linguistics and
neuroscience.

Candidates with a solid background in computational modeling and
cognitive science or neuroscience are expected.

Selection Criteria:
 - A master’s degree in Cognitive Science, Linguistics, or a related
field
 - Experience in experimental methods
 - Skills in natural language processing, multimodality and
interaction
 - Knowledge in neuro-linguistics
 - Interest in interdisciplinary work
 - Good writing and presentation skills
 - Good programming skills
