Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Historical Linguistics; Semantics; Syntax; Typology
Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

At the University of Göttingen, Graduiertenkolleg 2636 "Form-meaning
Mismatches", there is a funded position as graduate student to be
filled. Starting date is 1 September 2023. The position is limited to
3 years. The graduate student will work on a research project that
fits in within the overall theme of the RTG, ideally focusing on
syntax and/or language change and variation.

Applicants can choose a research topic of their own, as long as the
proposal fits the RTG’s guiding idea. The PhD student has two members
of the RTG as their main supervisors. In addition, there is a thesis
committee that oversees the overall progress. Applicants are expected
to have a completed academic degree in one or more of the following
fields or in a related subject: linguistics, general linguistics,
(modern/historical) languages/philology, computational
linguistics/computer science, cognitive science,
psychology/psycholinguistics, or philosophy. They are expected to hold
a Master’s degree (or equivalent). In addition, advanced command of
the English language is required. German language skills are not
required but are encouraged. Candidates who have not finished their MA
program by the date of the submission should deliver a declaration by
their supervisor(s) that the degree will be obtained prior to the
start of the RTG positions.

The RTG 2636 funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) offers a
structured 3-year doctoral program for students of linguistics and/or
related fields working on the overarching question as to how
morphosyntactic structures are mapped onto meaning. For more
information on the research program of the RTG, please visit
[https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/635554.html]. The RTG covers all
core areas of linguistics: grammatical theory (morphology, syntax,
semantics, pragmatics), linguistic variation including sign languages,
language change, language processing and language acquisition.
Facilities are available for a wide-range of research methods
including corpus studies, experimentation (for instance, eye
tracking), linguistic fieldwork and computational modeling.
Furthermore, the RTG does not explicitly restrict the grammatical
framework assumed for each research project.

Thus, candidates working in not only generative frameworks but also
Categorial grammar, constraint-based grammar (HPSG/LFG), and
functional grammar, among others, are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should include the following in a single PDF file named
“PhDposition + family name of applicant”:
 - A letter of motivation, in which they elaborate their ambitions,
scientific interests and how they consider fitting in the RTG’s
overall research goals and the scientific community in Göttingen in
general. In this letter, the applicants should also indicate what kind
of research topic they would prefer to work on (within the scientific
range of the RTG).
 - An academic CV
 - Scans of the documents indicating academic degrees (or the
supervisor declaration)
 - A copy of the Master’s thesis (or a representative chapter of the
thesis or a paper)
 - The contact details of two academic referees
Please upload your application in one PDF file including the above
documents by the deadline listed below to to the application portal of
the university below.

For any questions concerning the announced posts, you can contact the
