Meeting Description:

This one-day symposium provides an exciting opportunity to discuss and
engage with disciplinary literacy and corpus-based pedagogy across all
educational levels. The symposium is a hands-on interactive learning
experience aimed at secondary school teachers, researchers, PGT and
PGR students. Join us for a day of skill-building, networking, and
experiential learning that enhances your professional expertise in
language and education.

9:20 – 9:30     Symposium opening: Dr Andres Sandoval Hernandez
9:30 -10:20     Helen Handford: Teaching students to write with
coherence and flow in OIB or A Level History and Geography

10:20 – 10:40   Coffee break

10:40 -11:30    Dr Gail Forey & Natalie Cheers: The language of
science: understanding disciplinary literacy & scaffolding learners
11:30 – 12:20   Dr Jane Lockwood:       Writing for Geography and
History in secondary schools

12:20 -13:20    Lunch Break

13:20 – 14:10   Dr Reka R. Jablonkai: Genres and genre families in
secondary school exams: initial steps to compile the BAWESS Corpus to
support disciplinary literacy development
14:10: 15:00    Dr Lee McCallum: Using corpora with learners to
support their understanding of disciplinary discourses

15:20 – 16:10   Prof. Hilary Nesi: What kind of texts do university
students write?
