Description:

The Imagery and Brain research unit at the University of Tours,
France, is looking for applicants for a fully funded three-year PhD
project on language profiles in autism.

The PhD project is part of a larger research project, “Language
abilities in bilingual children with autism”, funded by the French
National Agency for Research (ANR). The main objective of this larger
project is to explore, via bilingualism- and autism-friendly
assessment tools, the effect of bilingualism on language development
in autistic children.

The PhD project in Tours will specifically investigate language
profiles in autistic children with or without Developmental
Intellectual Disorder (DID), which are currently poorly understood.
This is due in part to the heterogeneity of linguistic and
intellectual abilities which is characteristic of autism. The language
skills of autistic children can vary greatly across language domains
(e.g., pragmatics, lexicon, syntax, and phonology). Similarly, there
is a broad spectrum of intellectual abilities in autism, with a
significant number of individuals having DID. Furthermore, the impact
of autism symptomatology (communication and interaction deficits, and
restricted interests and behaviors) on the development of language
skills remains poorly understood. Another objective of this project is
thus to explore the impact of autistic symptomatology on the
characteristics of language profiles. For this project four
age-matched groups of children (6-12 years old) will be recruited:
children with autism, children with Developmental Language Disorder (a
neurodevelopmental disorder primarily affecting language), children
with DID (but without autism) and neurotypical children. The
experimental protocol will include language and non-language
assessment covering various domains. Statistical cluster analyses
crossing language and non-language measures will enable us to identify
language/non-language profiles in each group of children, which will
then be compared to each other.

PhD candidate’s profile:
 - Education: Master 2 in linguistics or a related domain or
discipline (for example speech and language pathology, psychology,
cognitive science) with a specialization in language acquisition, in
particular in contexts of a neurodevelopmental disorder.
 - Qualifications: ability to work as part of a team and advanced
mastery of computer software for data processing (in particular Excel)
and statistics (SPSS/R).
 - Assets: experience in interacting with autistic individuals and
individuals with a language disorder, and familiarity with
speech-language pathology (particularly in relation to Autism Spectrum
Disorder).
 - Required languages: French (C1 level), English (B2 level)

Offer:
 - We offer full-time employment as a PhD student in the context of
the above-mentioned project for 3 years, starting October 2023.
 - The successful candidate will be supervised by two professors of
linguistics and will be integrated in the larger project team.
 - He/she will also benefit from the stimulating environment of the
Imagery and Brain research unit at the University of Tours.
