Meeting Description:

International Symposium on Intercultural, Cognitive and Social
Pragmatics organised by the research group “Intercultural Pragmatic
Studies (English-Spanish): Pragmatic and Discourse Issues”. The
Symposium is known as EPICS, after the Spanish acronym for “Encuentros
de Pragmática Intercultural, Cognitiva y Social”. EPICS XI will be
held on May 22nd-24th 2024, at the Faculty of Humanities of Pablo de
Olavide University, Seville (Spain). It will be an on campus,
face-to-face academic event.

Final Call for Papers:

The 11th International Symposium on Intercultural, Cognitive and
Social Pragmatics (EPICS XI) will be held on May 22nd-24th 2024, at
the Faculty of Humanities of Pablo de Olavide University, Seville
(Spain). It will be an on campus event.
Conference theme: “Pragmatics and discourse analysis: Synergies to
understand interpersonal communication” (list of topics for
presentation below).

Plenary speakers:
- Kathleen Bardovi-Harlig, Indiana University Bloomington.
- Michael Haugh, The University of Queensland.
- Rodney Jones, University of Reading.

1. PRESENTATION TYPES
Presentations must be in English and address any of the subjects in
the list of topics below or any related topic connected with
pragmatics and discourse analysis.
A) ORAL PRESENTATIONS: 20' + 10' for Q&D.
B) THEMED PANELS: A number of thematically-related papers, each of
which must be 20' + 10' for Q&D. Proposals for panels should also
include a chair.
C) POSTERS
Participants presenting a poster must obey the following norms:
- Posters should be no larger than 118,9 x 84,1 cm (A0).
- They can be printed in colour or in black and white.
- Poster presenters must bring a printed copy of their poster with
them to the conference, as there will not be printing facilities at
the conference venue. Presenters will also be responsible for
displaying the poster and removing it at the time and in the place
designated by the conference organisers.

2. TOPICS
Topics for presentations may be, but are not limited to:
* New or recent interactions between different frameworks or
approaches in pragmatics and discourse analysis.
* Sociocultural and cognitive factors affecting production and
comprehension of language/discourse in face-to-face or mediated (by
telephone, computer, smartphone, etc.) communication in a variety of
genres (included social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and
settings (classroom, parliaments, service encounters, etc.).
* New developments, interactions or challenges in pragmatic analyses
of:
- Morphology, lexicon, syntax and/or prosody.
- Procedural meaning.
- Discourse types (professional, academic, digital, political,
humorous, etc.).
- (Im)Politeness and relational work in diverse settings and
communication modes.
- Language aggression and conflict.
- Expression and processing of emotions.
- Identity enactment.
- Figures of speech (irony, metaphor, hyperbole, etc.).
- Interlanguage pragmatic development.
- Online vs. offline communication and discourse.
* Experimental testing.
* Instructional pragmatics and methodological proposals for teaching
pragmatics.

3. SUBMISSIONS
Proposals must be sent through the conference website: XI
International Symposium on Intercultural, Cognitive and Social
Pragmatics (EPICS XI, 22-24 May 2024) - Home (upo.es)
Please make sure that your submission includes the following
information:

A) ORAL PRESENTATIONS AND POSTERS
* A Word/pdf file containing an anonymised one-page abstract no longer
than 300 words (references not included). Abstracts must follow the
format in the template available on the conference website. Please
name this file “Abstract_Surname”.
* A Word/pdf file, named “Data_Surname”, containing the following
information:
- Author’s/Authors’ name(s) and affiliation(s)
- Title of paper
- Topic(s) addressed (from among those in the list of topics above)
- Up to five keywords
- Audio-visual equipment required (computer, video, etc.)
- E-mail address(es)
- Postal address(es)
- If the paper or poster cannot be presented on a particular day of
the conference.

B) THEMED PANELS
In addition to the two files containing the abstract and the
information alluded to above for each presentation, panel proposals
must also include a one-page abstract no longer than 400 words for the
whole panel.

4. DATES
Deadline for receipt of abstracts: 1st December 2023. Notification of
acceptance: after 30th January 2024.

5. FEES
Early bird registration (until 28th February): speakers €190,
attendees €135.
Regular fee: speakers €220
