Description:

For DFG-project "From English in Hong Kong to Hongkong English - A new
diachronic approach to genre and varietal developments in
(post)colonial contexts", the Chair of English Linguistics at the
Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg invites applications for a
research position (PhD-Position) starting from 1 February 2024. The
position is part time (65%) for a period of three years. Remuneration
is based on the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder
(Collective Agreement for the Public Service of German Federal States,
TV-L).

One focus of English Linguistics in Würzburg in world Englishes
research is the study of the development of English in Hong Kong. In
the context of the above-mentioned project, business letters and
newspaper texts will be studied diachronically a) to identify genre-
and variety-specific features and empirically prove nativisation
processes and b) to relate linguistic changes to the concrete
socio-historical context.

Your tasks

Within the project, the candidates will write their own qualification
thesis (doctoral thesis) focusing on the development of one of the
above-mentioned text genres in Hong Kong in comparison to British
English. In addition to the scientific treatment of the topic
(literature research, linguistic data analysis, theory building,
etc.), the tasks associated with the position include the creation or
expansion of a corresponding database (archival work) as well as the
digital preparation of the data (OCR, corpus annotation, etc.).

Your tasks will also include assisting with
 - the compilation of the Diachronic Corpus of Hong Kong English
(DC-HKE)
 - publications in scientific journals
 - organising workshops and conferences
 - raising external funding
 - preparing presentation and documentation materials

Professional and methodological qualifications

Essential:
 - above-average university degree (university diploma/MA/first state
exam) in English linguistics
 - willingness to familiarise oneself with the technical skills
required for semi-automated data processing (OCR, TEI, etc.)
 - well-developed organisational and analytical skills
 - excellent command of spoken and written English

Desirable:
 - expertise in the field of world Englishes and corpus linguistics
 - experience with quantitative analysis methods (e.g., statistical
software R)
 - experience with automated text recognition

Personal attributes
 - very good communication skills and high capacity for teamwork
 - high commitment and reliability
