Call Deadline: 31-Dec-2023

Meeting Description:

The 10th conference Modern Greek Dialects and Linguistics Theory
continues the tradition of past events for the promotion of linguistic
research on Modern Greek dialects.

As opposed to other languages (e.g. Romance) and their dialects,
Modern Greek dialects are less known among linguists, yet these
dialects exhibit a bewildering variety of phenomena due to the fact
that many of them have developed in relative isolation (e.g.
Tsakonian) or in contact-situations with other dialects and/or other
languages (e.g. South Italian Greek). Modern Greek dialects offer a
plethora of interesting or even intriguing data which can be used to
test working hypotheses about language structure and language use and
can be analysed in different ways, by appealing to various methods and
theories developed in modern linguistics.

The aim of MGDLT10 is to highlight the importance of Modern Greek
dialects for linguistic theory, promote the study of dialectal
variation and contribute to the preservation of Greek linguistic
heritage. In this context, on 12th October 2024, the conference will
host a special theme section on the Greek dialects which are still
spoken in Calabria and Salento, Italy.

Call for Papers:

We invite abstracts for 20 oral papers and 15 posters presenting data
and theory on Modern Greek dialects in all areas of research, such as
of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics,
discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, historical
linguistics, and contact linguistics. Abstracts should be of a maximum
of 500 words (bibliography excluded) in English, Italian or Greek.
Each author can present maximally two papers: one single-authored
and/or one joint-paper, or two joint papers. Please, specify if the
abstract is to be considered as an oral presentation (20 minutes + 10
minutes discussion), a poster, or both.

The languages of the conference are English, Italian and Greek.
Presentations are welcomed in Greek dialects, as well.

Please, submit your abstract electronically to this email address
mgdlt10[at]mail.com by the 31st December 2023.
