Call for Papers:

Research Methods in L2 Pragmatics Learning
Special Issue of Research Methods in Applied Linguistics

This special issue of Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (RMAL)
invites submissions that focus on the designs, data collection, and
analyses used to investigate learning in L2 pragmatics. In this issue
learning is understood as acquisition, instructed acquisition, and
changes in interlanguage over time (actual or simulated) or in
response to instruction, study abroad, or cessation of input.

There have been several innovations in tasks and data collection in L2
pragmatics, and this issue complements those by focusing on research
design, data collection, coding, and analyses that highlight learning
in L2 pragmatics.

The topic of discussion may concern any facet of pragmatics.
Explorations of production, perception, and comprehension tasks are
equally welcome. Papers must establish empirical or theoretical bases
for measurements and analyses used. Preference will be given to
designs that match modality of tasks to the modality of the features
studied (e.g., oral-for-oral, written-for-written, CMC-for-CMC).

In keeping with the journal’s orientation, the papers included in this
issue will focus on research methods instead of reporting substantive
studies that exemplify research methods. In other words, research
methods must be the target and data must be collected to validate new
methods, illustrate innovations in methodological procedures, or
improve existing methods. Papers that synthesize existing methods and
propose ways to address limitations and papers that discuss the
epistemological underpinnings for research methods in pragmatics are
also welcome.

Abstract/Manuscript submission information
Interested contributors are invited to send an abstract of no more
than 600 words with a title by January 20, 2024, to Kathleen
Bardovi-Harlig at bardovi at indiana.edu. Abstracts may have an
additional page for data, samples of task items, examples of analyses,
or other pertinent information that does not lend itself well to an
abstract. Please supply references (not included in the word limit).

Authors should refer to the RMAL website and author guidelines for
details concerning the scope of the journal and the submission
process. A variety of article types are accepted by RMAL, including
research articles, review articles, brief reports, and methods
tutorials. Please also see freely available publications on the RMAL
website for examples of the topics and types of articles this journal
publishes.
