The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of
California-Irvine invites applications for an Assistant Professor of
Teaching with the potential for security of employment position. The
successful candidate will administer the language program and teach
courses on Spanish linguistics or related area of expertise.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics,
Educational Linguistics, or a closely related area by the start of the
appointment on July 1, 2024. Preference will be given to candidates
with a commitment to the administration of language programs. In
addition to the directorship, the successful candidate will teach six
courses a year. We are interested in candidates who can improve our
offerings in some of the following areas: instructed second language
acquisition, task-based language teaching, technology-mediated
language learning, writing instruction, Spanish for the professions,
socio or ethno-linguistics, translation, and heritage language
pedagogy.

language program administration; a curriculum vitae; writing sample;
evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., statement of teaching
philosophy, sample syllabi, sample lesson plans; student evaluations
of teaching); and three letters of reference. The application
materials must also include a separate statement that addresses past
and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Completed applications received by November 27, 2023, will receive
full consideration. Preliminary interviews will be conducted via Zoom
or phone.

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant
Professor of Teaching. Appointment, merit, and promotion in the
Professor of Teaching series requires, in addition to excellence in
teaching and service, that the candidate makes outstanding and
externally recognized contributions in research/creative activity in
pedagogy and/or the discipline. The teaching load for Professors of
Teaching in the School of Humanities is six regular courses per year.
Professors of Teaching may be granted course release for major service
duties beyond their regularly expected service assignments.

As a member of the University of California Academic Senate, the
successful candidate will be eligible for UCI’s faculty housing,
medical, and retirement programs. It is expected that they will
continue to develop as professionals in their respective fields by
attending relevant professional meetings, reviewing programs, and
collaborating with scholars outside the university.
