Description:

The Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia
(https://rom.uga.edu/) invites applications for the position of
tenure-track Assistant Professor of Romance Linguistics with a
specialization in Spanish Phonetics and/or Phonology to begin fall
2024.

The responsibilities of the position include teaching a 2/2 course
load in Spanish/Romance phonetics and phonological theory in addition
to introductory courses in linguistics at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, maintaining an active research program, and mentoring
student research in the MA and PhD programs in Hispanic and Romance
Linguistics.

Candidates should hold a PhD in Spanish, Romance Languages, or
Linguistics and have at least one year of experience teaching at the
university level. Competitive applicants will have a primary research
and teaching interest in Spanish that enhances the department’s
current research portfolio, have a strong record of research
commensurate with their current career stage, demonstrate excellence
in teaching, and show potential for or evidence of securing funding; a
research program incorporating another area/sub-field of Spanish
linguistics and/or an additional language of relevance to
Romance/Hispanic linguistics highly desirable.

Required Qualifications:
 - PhD in Spanish, Romance Languages, or Linguistics with a
specialization in Phonetics and/or Phonology.
 - Native/near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.
 - One year of experience teaching at the university level (including
as TA)
 - Ability to teach courses in phonetics and phonology in Spanish, in
addition to the applicant’s area of expertise

We welcome additional qualifications such as:
 - Proficiency in an additional language spoken in Latin America,
Spain, or Africa
 - Experience mentoring students
 - Proof of teaching effectiveness (demonstrated through evaluations,
recognitions, etc.)
 - A strong record (or strong potential) of presenting/publishing
academic research in Hispanic/Romance linguistics
 - Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to
interact with others in a professional, personable, and courteous
manner.
 - A secondary interest/specialty in one of the following areas
(listed alphabetically): acoustic or articulatory phonetics;
computational linguistics or corpus linguistics; documentation and/or
revitalization of understudied languages or Indigenous languages;
heritage languages; interfaces with other linguistic modules (e.g.
morphology, syntax, pragmatics); laboratory phonology; linguistic
variation; multilingualism and language contact; psycholinguistics and
speech perception; second language acquisition.

 - Statement of teaching philosophy (2 pages maximum)
 - Statement of research program (2 pages maximum).
 - Two sample papers or publications

should address the candidate’s teaching experience.
