BAAL LGaS SIG* event, April 5th 2024
De Montfort University, Leicester, UK

This one-day event will showcase new research and work-in-progress
investigating the role of language in shaping our understanding of
gender and sexuality in sports contexts. It aims to critically
interrogate the discourses that create, sustain and challenge
inequalities within this field.

*The Language, Gender and Sexuality Special Interest Group, a
subsidiary of the British Association for Applied Linguistics. The
event is being organised on behalf of the SIG by Dr Aimee Bailey (De
Montfort University) and Dr Lucy Jones (University of Nottingham).

Call for Papers:

This event will showcase new research and work-in-progress
investigating the role of language in shaping our understanding of
gender and sexuality in sports contexts. It aims to critically
interrogate the discourses that create, sustain and challenge
inequalities within this field.

We welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplines that tie
into the theme of the one-day conference. Possible topics could
include, but are not limited to:

•          The language of men’s and women’s sports, including
comparative analyses
•          Discourses of inclusion and exclusion, particularly those
surrounding trans and intersex participation in sports
•          Homophobic language in sports contexts
•          Identity construction of athletes, coaches and managers
•          Discourses in sports fan communities
•          Sports professionals’ talk in private and public settings

Presentations should be no more than 20 minutes in length. Abstracts
should not exceed 300 words (excluding title and references) and
should be sent to lgassig15 at gmail.com by 11 December 2023.

The event aims to bring together scholars working on relevant topics
with activists and practitioners in relevant industries and, as such,
we invite contributions from both areas.
