Linguistic Field(s): Sociolinguistics

Meeting Description:

Date: November 10-11, 2023
Venue: Yangzhou University, China

Rationale:
Language surveys and censuses are often used by linguists and
policy-makers as a welcome and valuable source of factual data on the
language situation of a particular country or region. Though the
reliability of this kind of data is sometimes problematized, language
surveys and censuses in themselves are researched quite rarely.

This symposium aims to address various technical, social and political
features of the organization of language surveys and censuses that are
used as useful management tools at macro levels. Taking examples from
various regions and countries, particularly in Europe and Asia, the
symposium aims at demonstrating that language surveys and censuses are
embedded in the complex network of social relationships and interests,
meaning that their results can hardly be taken as "neutral" or "mere
facts".

The symposium is open to the use of all relevant theories and
approaches. Issues addressed may include but not be limited to the
following: language surveys and censuses as part of organized language
management at national level; formulation and re-formulation of the
language questions as a reflection of the socio-cultural management
(including management of ethnic identity); how the language question
is managed in the responses of the participants; language management
summaries as formulated in participants' responses; the role of
interests in language surveys and censuses both at the level of
organized and simple language management, and the like.
