University or Organization: Labex Empirical Foundations of Linguistics
Job Location: Northern Paris, France
Web Address: https://www.labex-efl.fr/
Job Title: Post-Doc researcher on "Legal Information Retrieval"
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

The LabEx EFL (Empirical Foundations of Linguistics,
http://www.labex-efl.fr/ ) is hiring a post-doc researcher on the
topic of “Legal Information retrieval”. The position is funded by
Strand 5 (Computational Semantic Analysis). The recruited person will
work at the LIPN (https://lipn.univ-paris13.fr/home/), RCLN team
“Knowledge Representation and Natural Language”.

The post-doc objective is to: (1) review and assess the CLAL (Core
Legal Annotation Language, https://lipn.univ-paris13.fr/~fl/CLAL/)
language, which proposes a coarse-grained, interpretation-neutral,
semantic annotation layer [1]; (2) consider and develop extensions and
alternatives, e.g., by adding semantic layers such as a discourse
layer; (3) create corpora for supervised learning; and (4) develop
advanced information retrieval tools. The initial experimental corpus
is the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR,
https://gdpr-info.eu/) in English, which will be augmented with
additional regulations. One possible line of work is to apply and
assess the annotations to related texts in other languages, e.g., the
GDPR in French.

The recruited researcher will:
 - participate in the design of the experimental protocols, in
particular by selecting competency questions and defining relevant use
cases;
 - lead manual annotation campaigns with a team of annotators to
create gold standard corpora;
 - propose additional semantic layers based on new semantic needs;
 - develop a dedicated information retrieval tool;
 - carry out experiments (user studies and machine learning) and
analyze the results obtained;
 - valorize the results obtained, in particular through publications.

semantic annotation for search of legal texts - an experiment on GDPR.
In: JURIX. Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications, vol.

Expected skills:
 - PhD in computer science (NLP, IR, SW);
 - Knowledge of Semantic Web technologies, i.e. ontologies, and
knowledge graphs;
 - Programming for Semantic Web, Machine Learning, and Information
Retrieval;
 - Ability to dialogue and coordinate with the various partners: legal
professionals, computer scientists, linguists, ...;
 - Academic writing for conference and journal papers.

Practical information:
Place of work: LIPN, Sorbonne Paris North University
Salary: approx. 2 100€ (net) per month
