Call for Papers:

Technology Influences on L2 Pronunciation Research and Teaching

The Journal of Second Language Pronunciation solicits contributions
for a special issue on changes in technology (such as generative
Artificial Intelligence) and how they will influence L2 pronunciation
research and teaching. The special issue will be published by December
2024. All areas of L2 pronunciation research and teaching (including
empirical studies, teaching-oriented papers, meta-analyses and
critical literature reviews) are invited.

In 2015, the Journal of Second Language Pronunciation became the first
specialized L2 pronunciation journal focusing on concerns important to
applied linguistics and language teaching. In 2018, a special issue on
technology and pronunciation was published in JSLP which included
discussions of technological influences including automatic speech
recognition, spoken corpora, speech visualization, and High
Variability Phonetic Training. The intersection of pronunciation and
technology remains a hot topic, as evidenced by recent books on
technology and pronunciation teaching (Kang et al., 2021; McCrocklin,
2022). The rise of artificial intelligence models promises to further
revolutionize the teaching and learning of pronunciation. We invite
proposals for papers in which technology is an integral component of
the research, in topics such as, but not limited to:

● Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)
● ASR, TTS, and Speech Visualization
● Voice Cloning and Speech Synthesis
● Approaches to Data Collection and Big Data
● The Use of Instructional Technologies (e.g., Virtual/Augmented
Reality)
● Pronunciation and Spoken Corpora
● Automated Pronunciation Assessment

Special Issue Timeline
