Meeting Description:

Ever since the early days of generative grammar, the size of clauses
(in particular, embedded and non-finite) has been an issue of ongoing
interest.
Oversimplifying to a certain degree, two main strands of research may
be identified in the literature: one that assumes that certain
operations apply in order to reduce a full-fledged clause (i.e. a CP),
and one that assumes that predicates select/embed structures smaller
than CPs (i.e. a TP, a VoiceP, a vP, etc.).
There is a large body of work, both theoretically and descriptively
oriented, favouring (variants of) one of the two strands, notably,
restructuring and clause reduction (see Aissen & Perlmutter 1976;
Rizzi 1978; Cinque 1999; Wurmbrand 2001), exfoliation (Pesetsky 2021),
complex predicate formation in various languages (for Romance
languages, see Sheehan 2016; Dragomirescu et al. 2022), subjunctives
in the Balkan languages (e.g., the truncated CP analysis of the
Romanian subjunctive, Alboiu 2007), irrealis non-finite complements in
southern Italian dialects (e.g., Ledgeway & Lombardi 2014, Taylor
2014, Groothuis 2022), etc.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested
in various topics concerning the size of clauses. Both theoretical and
more empirically oriented papers are welcome, as long as they
contribute to a better understanding of the issues concerning clausal
size.

This workshop is part of the The Ninth International Symposium of
Linguistics organised by the “Iorgu Iordan – Alexandru Rosetti”
Institute of Linguistics of the Romanian Academy on May 23-24, 2024.

Keynote speakers in the Symposium:
- Prof. Roberta D’Alessandro, University of Utrecht, Netherlands
- Prof. Adam Ledgeway, University of Cambridge, UK
- Prof. David Pesetsky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
US
- Prof. Arhonto Terzi, University of Patras, Greece
