Dr. Thierry Nazzi (INCC, CNRS – Université Paris Cité), a specialist
in early language acquisition, and Dr. Mark Van de Velde and Dr.
Dmitri Idiatov (Llacan, CNRS – INALCO - EPHE), specialists in African
languages, are joining forces to start a project on the early
acquisition of languages spoken in Africa (TYPMP4), focusing on early
perceptual and lexical stages. This new project will be exploring the
acquisition of Akan, a tone language spoken in Ghana. In particular,
the project will test whether the presence of tones in this language
has an impact on the differential weight given to consonants and
vowels in lexical acquisition. Indeed, while studies on non-tone
languages established that young infants develop a consonant-bias in
lexical processing during the first 2 ½ years of life (e.g., Nazzi,
2005; for a review, see Nazzi & Cutler, 2019), studies on Asian tone
languages suggest that the presence of a complex tone system might
lead to an opposite vowel-bias (for Mandarin: Wewalaarachchi, Wong, &
Singh, 2017; for Cantonese: Chen, Lee, Luo, Lai, Cheung, & Nazzi,
2021). The present project will determine whether such an effect would
extend to Akan, which has a tone system of 2 tones (compared to 4 in
Mandarin or 6 in Cantonese), by testing Akan-learning toddlers in
Accra. Complementary studies testing French-learning todders in Paris,
using stimuli in Akan, will also be conducted.

Applicants will have a PhD in Experimental Psychology, Linguistics,
Cognitive Science or a related discipline. A strong background in
experimental methods and statistical analyses is required, with some
direct experience in testing infants or young children. Knowledge of
Akan is strongly favored to prepare stimuli and facilitate testing in
Accra. In Paris, the working languages in the lab are French and
English, while some knowkedge of French will help for testing.

Applications (pdf-format only) should include:
 - a CV
 - a motivation letter describing previous work and research interests
 - examples of publications (published or in progress)
 - the names and email contact details of 2 referees
