Meeting Description:

The Conference on Indigenous Science and Language (CISL), hosted by
the Collaborative Language Planning Project (CLPP), will be held at
the University of Montana in Missoula on Thursday, May 16 and Friday,
May 17, 2024. We invite presentations on topics relating to the
conference theme, including, but not limited to: ethnosciences (e.g.,
astronomy, mathematics, botany), linguistics, language teaching and
pedagogy, language planning, language reclamation, interdisciplinary
language research, language
acquisition, language and well-being, and artificial intelligence
(AI). We are particularly interested in Indigenous-led and/or
community-based activities and research projects. Scholars and
students from Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities are welcome to
submit abstracts.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT ABSTRACTS
The deadline to submit abstracts is midnight, Mountain Standard Time,
on February 29, 2024.
Abstracts must conform to the guidelines below.

GUIDELINES
● Any presenter may submit one single-authored abstract and one
co/multi-authored abstract OR two co/multi-authored abstracts.
● The content of the presentation must adhere to what was submitted in
the accepted abstract.
● Presentations should not exceed 15 minutes in length. 5 minutes of
Q&A will follow each presentation.
● Presentations on intersections between Indigenous Science and
language work/linguistics are preferred.
● Presentations on Indigenous Science that do not include a language
component will still be considered.

ABSTRACT FORMAT
● At the top of the abstract, include a presentation title and all
authors’ names and affiliations. Choose a title that clearly
communicates the topic of the presentation.
● The body of the abstract should be no more than 300 typed words, not
including references.
● At the end of the abstract, following the references, give a very
short version of the abstract (50 words) to be included in the
conference program, if accepted.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
● Abstracts should be submitted in PDF form by email to
clppmontana at gmail.com with the subject line: CISL-2 Abstract -
followed by the last name of the first author (e.g., CISL-2 Abstract -
Smith).

IMPORTANT DATES
Deadline to submit abstracts 02/29/2024
Notification of acceptance 03/22/2024
Deadline for authors to confirm participation 03/29/2024
Conference registration opens 04/15/2024
Conference registration closes 05/01/2024 or when it is full

Indigenous and non-Indigenous language workers from varied disciplines
who work to enhance communication and collaboration among language
activists, language teachers, students, and researchers in the state
