Description:

Applicants are welcome to apply for a 4-year state-funded junior
research fellow (PhD student) position at the Institute of Psychology,
University of Tartu, Estonia. The successful candidate will work on
the Estonian Research Council project “Native Language Experience and
the Brain’s Perception and Learning of a Foreign Language” (2024–2028)
awarded to Dr. Siqi Lyu. The project investigates how the tonal
component in Estonian, which is of secondary status in the Estonian
phonetic system, and the Chinese tone, a dominant cue to discriminate
word meanings in Chinese, affect the respective native speaker’s
perception and learning of a foreign language differently. The student
will be co-supervised by Dr. Siqi Lyu (Institute of Psychology), Dr.
Pärtel Lippus (Institute of General and Estonian Linguistics), and Dr.
Kairi Kreegipuu (Institute of Psychology).

The successful candidate will enter a fixed-term employment contract
with the University of Tartu as a junior research fellow starting
September 2024. The tasks of this position are to design and conduct
project-related experiments, analyze the data, and write and publish
the results. There are chances to be involved in teaching and/or
co-supervising master’s student(s) with Dr. Siqi Lyu if the candidate
wants to gain relevant experience.

Gross salary: starting from 1830 EUR/month

Eligibility:
 - A master’s degree in linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, or
a relevant field
 - Highly motivated to learn new knowledge
 - English language proficiency at a satisfactory level (level B2
according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

Preference will be given to applicants with the following
qualifications:
 - Experience with experimental phonetics or auditory perception
experiments
 - Experience with the writing and/or publishing of peer-reviewed
journal articles
 - Solid statistical foundations

The Institute of Psychology has three state-funded positions each
academic year. The applicant will compete openly with applications
from all the other subdisciplines of psychology. The evaluation takes
place in May and June. Candidates will be evaluated in two stages: (1)
the Admissions Committee evaluates the doctoral thesis projects; (2)
applicants whose doctoral thesis project is assessed positively will
be invited to the interview.

Interested applicants are strongly recommended to contact Dr. Siqi Lyu
(siqi.lyu at ut.ee) by March 1, 2024, to receive full support for the
doctoral thesis project and the interview. Please include your CV and
a short motivation letter in the initial contact.

The university’s application system will open May 1–15 for candidates
who receive a master’s degree outside of Estonia and June 1–15 for
candidates who receive a master’s degree in Estonia. The interview
usually takes place at the end of June.
