Duties:

The Department of Comparative Literature and Languages at the
University of California, Riverside seeks to fill a tenure-track
position of Assistant Professor of Teaching in Linguistics beginning
in Fall 2024. We are looking for candidates with (1) demonstrated
excellence in teaching introductory survey courses in linguistics as
well as upper-division courses in core subfields such as syntax,
morphology, phonology, phonetics, and semantics, and (2) a research
specialization in second-language acquisition or heritage language
acquisition.

Preference will be given to candidates whose research specializations
lie in the areas of phonetics and/or phonology. Interest and aptitude
in teaching computational linguistics would also be welcome. Following
the first year of service this faculty member will, on an ongoing
basis, take on the role of Director of Language Studies to support
non-English-language pedagogy in our 11 vibrant language programs.
Duties may include collaboration and leadership in the administration
of language programs; the development and revision of placement
examinations; Teaching Assistant coordination, training, and support;
infrastructure and curricular development; the intersection of
language studies with on-line tools and pedagogical practices; and/or
the development and revision of language learning outcome assessments;
as well as contributions in other areas of language study.

The ideal candidate will have experience in L2 pedagogy. This faculty
member will be a core member of our Linguistics faculty and will
collaborate in the supervision of the major, the advising of
undergraduate and graduate students, and the development of the
program in the short and long terms. The normative teaching load for
this role is 6 courses/year plus service duties to the Linguistics
major and program as well as to the department.

In UCR’s Professor of Teaching ranks, a person is expected not only to
introduce intellectual fields to students as well as train students in
more advanced studies in their areas of interest and expertise, but
also to foster students’ intellectual independence, creativity, and
reasoning abilities, and to arouse curiosity. For promotion to
Associate Professor of Teaching, a person must show evidence of
excellence in teaching, intellectual leadership through publications,
creative accomplishments or other professional activity, and also
demonstrate service to the department, the university, and/or the
public.
