Meeting Description:

ENG: The conference aims to explore the role of rhetoric in
contemporary society, focusing both on the strategies actually used in
different communicative contexts (e.g. politics, science, law,
economics) and on the role of the discipline and its reputation among
scholars and the public. In particular, it aims to gather
contributions that focus not only on the persuasive function of
rhetoric, but also on its pedagogical and cognitive potential, which
is increasingly interesting in a world often poisoned by manipulative
and misleading discursive practices. Against the backdrop of a
widespread negative evaluation of rhetoric, particularly evident in
the Italian context, the conference also aims to investigate the
current status of the discipline in different linguistic and cultural
traditions.
The conference will be an opportunity to present the newly created
Inter-University Centre for Research in Rhetoric (CIRHET), which aims
to bring together scholars from different backgrounds who, within the
specific field of their own discipline, are dedicated to the study of
rhetoric from different perspectives. The goal of the Centre is to
promote research on rhetoric and its dissemination, in the conviction
that a better knowledge of rhetoric and its positive evaluation can
offer a strategic contribution to education and to the improvement of
the quality of social relations.

IT: Il convegno intende esplorare il ruolo della retorica nella
società contemporanea, focalizzandosi tanto sulle strategie
effettivamente utilizzate in diversi contesti comunicativi (ad es.
politica, scienza, diritto, economia) quanto sul ruolo della
disciplina e sulla sua reputazione presso gli studiosi e il pubblico.
In particolare, ha l’obiettivo di raccogliere contributi centrati non
solo sulla funzione persuasiva della retorica, ma anche sulle sue
potenzialità pedagogiche e cognitive, sempre più interessanti in un
mondo spesso avvelenato da pratiche discorsive manipolatorie e
fuorvianti. Sullo sfondo delle valutazioni particolarmente negative
della tecnica e della parola retorica dominanti nel contesto italiano,
il convegno mira anche ad indagare comparativamente lo status della
disciplina in diverse tradizioni culturali e linguistiche.
Il convegno sarà l’occasione per presentare il costituendo centro
interuniversitario di ricerca sulla retorica (CIRHET), che ha
l’obiettivo di raccogliere studiosi di diversa formazione i quali,
ciascuno nell’ambito specifico della propria disciplina, si dedicano
agli studi retorici da diverse prospettive e, congiuntamente, aspirano
a promuoverne la diffusione, nella convinzione che una maggiore
conoscenza della retorica e una sua positiva valutazione possano
offrire un contributo strategico alla formazione di cittadini più
attenti e consapevoli e al miglioramento della qualità delle relazioni
sociali.

Call for Papers:

ENG: Contributions are invited on, but not limited to, the following
areas:
• The role of rhetoric in different contexts (public debate, media
discourse, scientific
communication, doctor-patient interaction, judiciary argumentation,
corporate
communication, etc)
• The educational function of rhetoric
• Rhetoric and text analysis
• Rhetoric and cognition
• The classic origins of rhetoric and its historical evolution
• Rhetoric as a discipline: nature and perspectives
• Rhetoric’s reputation today

IT: Saranno accolti contributi riferibili primariamente, ma non
esclusivamente, alle seguenti aree
tematiche:
• il ruolo della retorica in diversi contesti comunicativi (il
dibattito pubblico, il discorso dei
media, la comunicazione scientifica, la comunicazione medico-paziente,
l’argomentazione
giudiziaria, la comunicazione aziendale, ecc.)
• la funzione formativa della retorica

• le origini classiche della retorica e la sua parabola storica
• la retorica come disciplina: caratteristiche e prospettive
