> It's that time of the year again! We are having the 2nd Sunday of Advent
today,
> Hanukkah has arrived too, and Christmas is not far away.

And whilst we're on the subject of holidays we shouldn't forget
Sinterklaas - which I understand is almost more important than Christmas
in the Dutch-speaking world! (And being German by birth I should, of
course, mention its German equivalent of Nikolaustag too)

Allow me to share something that my husband told me about this
morning...

He checked into a hotel on the Northern outskirts of Brussels last
night, and along with his room key he was given a card explaining all
about the various customs relating to Sinterklaas and... a carrot!!! He
was told that if he put the carrot in his shoe and placed it outside his
door Sinterklaas would come and collect it to feed it to his mule, and
that he might leave a little gift in return (which he did).

My husband thought this was a very nice gesture (especially considering
this was a "business" hotel as opposed to a "family" one) - wonder how
many other hotels would do that sort of thing?
