In South Africa you are likely to get your shoes violently ripped off your
feet. Like Ron said here is exceptions also but they are not many. It is hard
however not to notice the common factors  to violence and crime between the
States and here.

Perhaps you used too broad a brush to paint this picture.  I think all depends

on where in the US and in which type of hotel you stay.  Not all of this
country
fits the stereotype of rampant mugging, murder and mayhem, and not all
European
places and hotels are safe.  It is true, though, that American and Canadian
hotels tend to resemble apartment buildings with fairly lax security, while
European hotels, certainly the better ones, do not permit anyone off the
street
to enter the hallways.  Of course, none of this would prevent guests to steal
each others' shoes.
