Same as in the sooth! Oo seem ti be uizin SAMPA different, John. A wad write
"butter" as [bA?@r] an "batter" as [bA:?@r] or, mair strict, [bA.?er]
(hauf-lang). Is this no richt?

It's true that the "u" an the "a" here dinna soond qualitatively the same in
a Scots accent, length aside, but A think this is richt as a approximate or
phonemic representation.

Ay qualifeein aathing wi the fact that A ken next ti naething aboot
linggistics, mind you!
