It's an inflected form, dative plural. (The geographic Latin words in -um
are neuter nominative singular.)

Het is inderdaad een verbuigingsvorm. De uitgang -um van een zelfstandig
naamwoord in het Faerös (net als in het IJslands en in alle Oudgermaanse
talen, zowel Noord- als West-Germaans) is de gewone vorm van de datief in
het meervoud. Het is geen latinisme. Wat de etymologie ervan is weet ik
niet, maar volgens "Germanische Sprachwissenschaft" door Hans Krahe en
Wolfgang Meidt schijnt het niet verwant te zijn met de latijnse uitgangen
op -um. Ik snap ook niet waarom een adres in het telefoonboek uitgerekend
in de datief moet zijn geschreven, maar ik zal het aan een Faeröse kennis
vragen.

Doubtless there are people on this list who know a lot more about Faroese
than I do, but Fo/royum would presumably be the dative plural after i' (in)
of Fo/royar, the -_-oyar_ meaning 'islands' (cp. Icelandic _ey(ja)_ (f)). I
don't have a Faroese grammar or dictionary, so I can't say exactly how it
would decline (perhaps like _hurdh_, 'door'), but as far as I can remember
all Faroese dative plurals end in -um.

I seem to remember that there's another Faroese word for 'island' though -
I think the plural would be something like 'oyggjar'. Am I completely on
the wrong track here, or would the ending in Fo/royar be an older form?
