I have just come across an interesting application of the term
"hypercorrection" in Van Den Toom's Nederlandse Taalkunde.
He applies it to the pronunciation of Du. "dergelijk" as "derg'l'k" (where '
indicates the neutral vowel or schwa). "-lijk" as a suffix (corresponding to
E. "-ly) is normally pronounced -l'k, but in this case it isn't a suffix but
a root cognate with E. "like" in the sense "equal", etc. (Du. "gelijk" = E.
"equal", "right".) One might think that "hypocorrection" was a better term.
