From: R. F. Hahn <sassisch at geocities.com>
Subject: Pronunciation

Dear Lowlanders,

A while ago Andy Eagle wanted to know if the sound represented in IPA as a
barred o (i.e., an o with a horizontal stroke through it) is used in any
"well-known" language. I explained that it is a central rounded vowel (i.e., in
between back [o] and from [ö]). In the meantime I realized that this is how
short /u/ is pronounced in Standard Swedish; e.g., in _hund_ 'dog', _kunde_
'could', _skulle_ 'should', _bus_ 'bus', _upp_ 'on'. Swedish long /u/ is
pronounced in the same central position, just higher, represented by a barred u
in IPA.

I hope this helped at least a little, Andy.

Regards,

Reinhard/Ron
