Subject: Little words

One of the major concert halls in London is the (Royal) Albert Hall. I have
always used the definite article with it. Americans tend to say just "Albert
Hall", which fits in with US models such as Carnegie Hall, though perhaps
that usage is not universal. I have recently noticed that radio announcers
here are dropping the article, and I have just heard one of them refer to a
smaller place as "Wigmore Hall", whereas I would use "the" there as well. I
should be interested to know whether there are regional differences in this
usage within the UK and whether anyone else has noticed this apparent change
in respect of these or other places.
