Dear Lowlanders,
A little while ago we briefly discussed Low Franconian dialects of Germany.
Georg Deutsch was surprised to learn that there were any, and perhaps others
among you did too. As we have mentioned, these dialects are being lumped
together with the Low Saxon dialects of Germany under the catch-all label
_Niederdeutsch_ or _Plattdeutsch_ ("Low German"). Although they have undergone
German influences, the Low Franconian dialects of Germany are obviously most
closely related to the dialects of Dutch and Afrikaans and also to the North
Ripuarian and Limburgian dialects.
I thought some of you might be interested in another Low Franconian language
sample. The one I am offering you here is seasonal, though it is a bit
belated. It is a song children sing on Martinmas, on November 11, when they go
from house to house to collect "donations." This is a custom of an area
including much of Belgium and the Netherlands as well as Luxemburg and the Lower
Rhine area of Germany. However, there are similarities between this custom and
"Walking the Lantern" around Martinmas and "trick-or-treating" on New year's Eve
in other parts of Northern Germany. We discussed all this on Lowlands-L a
couple of years ago. Or was it last year?
This sample is in the dialect of Mölm/Mülheim on the Ruhr. I spent a vacation
period there (a rather attractive town) as a child and wondered why it was
fairly hard to understand the locals when they spoke among themselves when just
a little farther east people speak Westphalian Low Saxon. The reason was that
the Saxon-Franconian boundary was nearby.
I will present the song in two versions I found published. I will also present
the more recently published version in German-based spelling, in Dutch-based
spelling and in English translation. Note that the second verse is in (High)
German.
